One of the most contested doctrines of Scripture is the teaching of election, that is, the teaching that God chose certain people to be saved. In fact, the whole Scriptural teaching regarding election is that it is sovereign, unconditional, pre-temporal, personal, redemptive, and comprehensive. It is a teaching that stuns the natural man. To him it is shocking and even hateful. But to the believer it is delightful. To him it means great comfort in the unshakeable love of God. It means great encouragement to serve God, for he knows that God will accomplish his purposes. It means great glory to God alone, which is the believer's greatest joy. I hope that you will see the soul-satisfying glory of God this Lord's Day unveiled in the Scriptural teaching of election!

In our recent series of sermons, we have been attempting to scan the panorama of God's great plan of salvation. Up until now, we have surveyed the work especially as it relates to the awe-inspiring and faith-eliciting action of the Triune God. But now we will move to feast our eyes upon the orderly outworking of God's gracious action in relationship to us.
The first thing we notice as our eyes examine the whole work is how all of it is applied to us in relation to Christ. Everything about our redemption, beginning with God's election in eternity past and going all the way through our glorification in eternity future, comes about in connection with Christ. He is the vine; we are the branches. He is the cornerstone; we are the building. He is the representative; we are his people. He is the head; we are the body. God is the source of our life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom and our righteousness and sanctification and redemption. Come draw your life from him with us!

Jesus Christ accomplished all that was needed for our redemption. But how exactly does his work apply to us? There had to be some powerful transaction take place. And here the focus shifts to the third person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit. By his miraculous power and great grace, the Spirit applies to us exactly what Christ died and rose again to accomplish in our lives.

A mighty fortress is our God,
A bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and pow'r are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right man on our side,
The Man of God's own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabbaoth his name,
From age to age the same,
And he must win the battle.

Due to my trip to the Mid-America Conference on Preaching at Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary this week, this update is a little late in coming. Thank you for those who prayed for me while I was gone. It was a profitable trip.
This Lord's Day we will continue searching out the amazing work that Christ accomplished. In particular, we intend to savor the redemption that set us free from sin. I hope you know and live in the freedom of Christ today!

Jesus, my great High Priest, offered his blood and died;
My guilty conscience seeks no sacrifice beside.
His pow'rful blood did once atone,
And now it pleads before the throne.
To this dear Surety's hand will I commit my cause;
He answers and fulfills his Father's broken laws.
Behold my soul at freedom set;
My Surety paid the dreadful debt.
My advocate appears for my defense on high;
The Father bows his ears and lays his thunder by.
Not all that hell or sin can say
Shall turn his heart, his love, away.
These words by Isaac Watts express well Christ's amazing accomplishments. As we continue to learn of God's great plan of salvation, this Lord's Day we will consider that the Father does "lay his thunder by." Jesus Christ's sacrifice not only takes away our guilt, it also satisfies God's rightful anger toward sin.
